Wine & Words Book Club Meeting – January 25, 2011 – Minutes from Sandie Koplowitz
The meeting was held at Karen’s and all members were able to attend. Karen passed out flyers for a fundraiser that her daughter is involved with. Please visit www.OrphansAfrica.org for more information. After a delicious dinner of salad and risotto, the group discussed the book “Half the Sky,” by Kristoff and WuDunn. Afterwards we discussed books members are reading. A list follows:
Border Songs – Jim Lynch – Local author, got rave reviews on Amazon
Cutting for Stone, several members are enjoying this and it also has wonderful reviews. We keep talking about it at book club meetings, so perhaps this would be a good choice. Currently $5 for Kindle edition.
Unbowed – Wengari Maathai
Outliers – Malcolm Gladwell – Other books by author are Blink and What the Dog Saw
Devotions – Danielle Follmi – Ann, is this the correct book?
Girls from Ames – Jeffrey Zaslow
Brightest Star in the Sky – Marion Keyes
Breech – Ann, I couldn’t figure out what book this is…can you let us know?
Cleopatra – Karen, can you let us know who the author is?
The Room – Emma Donoghue – not yet out in paperback
The Jungle – Upton Sinclair
Just Kids – Patty Smith
Huckleberry Finn – Mark Twain – Lots of versions of this available both in paperback and eReader
True Grit – Charles Portis
King’s Speech – Mark Logue and Peter Conradi
Winter’s Bone – Danielle Woodrell
The book for February is Outliers, by Malcolm Gladwell. The book to read for March is “Huckleberry Finn,” by Mark Twain – This has been in the news lately because a new book is scheduled to be released next month, replacing the word “N*gger” with “slave.”
The next meeting will be held on February 28th at Kay’s home and Karen will be in charge of dessert. The meeting was changed from our regular meeting date due to conflicts of several members. Please RSVP to Kay and let her know if you will be attending the meeting. The rest of the meetings for the year are:
Mar. 29 Cindy
April 26 Pat
May 31 Sandie
