October 2019

The October meeting of Wine and Words Book Club was held at Cindy’s. Everyone was able to attend but Karen, who was traveling in the South. Lou served us a delicious meal of barbecued pork, brown rice and green salad. Cindy served a raspberry cobbler pie with ice cream for desert.

Linda made reservations for the November meeting at the Northwater restaurant, at the Holiday Inn at the Airport, for 5pm on Tuesday, November 26.

Sandie passed around a list for members to write down books they read with their name, book title and author. This will help when preparing the notes from the meetings.

We discussed the book for October, Where the Crawdads Sing. Everyone who read the book enjoyed it. Several members hadn’t finished it, so we did not want to talk about the ending, but those who read it said they did not see it coming.

Books read and enjoyed by members:

Linda liked Women Rowing North, by Mary Pipher, which was suggested last month. We do not have this on our book club list, but it is recommended reading for members looking for another book to read.

Ann read and enjoyed Leaving Time by Jodi Pocoult, which is a story set within a story of how elephants grieve.

Jan read Sole of America, by Jon Meacham.

Jan mentioned Mudbound, which we already suggested for later in the year as one of our books.

Kay’s other book club read The Hate you Give and she didn’t like it.

Kay, reported on another group’s recommended book, Nudge. She doesn’t recommend it. Several members thought we read it as a book club, but it isn’t on the list.

Sandie asked if members are familiar with local author, Annie Boochever. She has written several young adult novels about life in Alaska. Her website is at annieboochever.com.

Sandie described her presentation about Francis Larrabee at her garden club last month. The article she wrote is online at http://edgemoorneighborhood.com/who-was-frances-larrabee/.

We looked at the tentative book schedule prepared at last month’s meeting and approved the books through June, 2020. They are listed below and on the Schedule page of our website.

The book for November is Property, by Valerie Martin. Please note this is not the book of the same title containing short stories, by Lionel Shriver. The next meeting will be at the Northwater restaurant, at the Holiday Inn at the Airport, at 5pm on Tuesday, November 26.
