October 2020

The October 2020 meeting of Wine and Words Book Club was set up by Sandie online, using Microsoft Teams. Karen, Linda, Kay, Cindy and Sandie attended the meeting. We missed you, Jan, Anne and Jodi!

We discussed the books for October, Mexican Gothic, by  Silvia Moreno-Garcia, and  Truths We Hold, by Kamala Harris. Sandie listened the Audible version of Mexican Gothic and really enjoyed the book. Interestingly, other members thought it was too creepy, but not to Sandie, who has enjoyed some really creepy Stephen King novels. She enjoyed reading it because it helped her understand the draw of gothic romance novels, but probably won’t seek out more of this genre to read in the future. One good one is enough for her. Linda didn’t like the book and the creep factor caused her to leave the book unfinished. She felt it did not live up to the online reviews. Cindy had read the book over the summer, but she agreed it wasn’t the most enjoyable book she read.

Sandie is halfway though Truths We Hold and is also listening to the Audible version. It is interesting to listen to Kamala Harris as she narrates her own book. It really gives the reader a feel for who the possible next VP (and maybe President) is and what she believes, as well as an overview of her journey to get where she is today.

Karen has All the Devils are Here, a mystery novel she enjoyed reading, by Louise Penny.

Linda and Cindy both read and enjoyed Book Woman of Troublesome Creek, by Kim Michele Richardson.

We looked over our list of recommended books from summer reading and chose to read Doc and  Something Fishy in Italy for December.

Kay mentioned My Garden Nursery on Bakerview has an amazing assortment of puzzles.

We decided to meet online in November and December this year in order to stay in touch. Meeting dates are November 24th and December 29th, both at 4 PM.

November book is Vanishing Half, by Brit Bennett.
