March 2014

Linda, Jan, Kay, Karen, Pat, Sandie and Ann met at Karen’s home and she served a delicious meal of Calypso Chicken and green salad with corn bread. Ann provided a wonderful flour-less chocolate tort from Trader Joe’s.

Books discussed at the meeting (Member who read or suggested):

Wild: From Lost to Found on the Pacific Crest Trail, by Cheryl Strayed  (Sandie) – Whatcom Reads book for 2014 – Book for September

Painted Drum by Louise Erdrich (Ann)

Perfume Collector by Kathleen Tessaro (Karen)

Strapless by Deborah Davis (Karen) – Book for April

Whiskey Cove by Denise Frisino (Kay)

Invention of Wings by Sue Monk Kidd (Pat)

The book for March was, Truth and Beauty, by Ann Patchett. Some members didn’t read it and a few who read it did not enjoy it. Ann thought it was interesting because it was based on an actual relationship between the author and her close friend, Lucy. She pointed out a main theme, you can hurt the ones you are closest to, because you know you will be forgiven. By the end of the book Lucy could only find happiness through heroin and eventually died from a heroin overdose, accidental or intentional is unknown. Ann couldn’t relate to her anymore by the time she became an addict. Lucy only had one person who related to her in her life and she pushed her away.

The next meeting will be held on April 29 at 6:30 PM at Ann’s house. Karen will bring dessert. The book for April is Strapless by Deborah Davis.

A schedule page will be added to the website shortly.
